Clinton Lead Dropping Fast As Email Scandal Blows Up

Overall, the poll narrowed on Saturday by two points from the day before, suggesting some Clinton supporters are having second thoughts following FBI Director James Comey's stunning decision late Friday to reopen the investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a homebrew email server while secretary of state.

Unrounded, the poll gives Clinton a 44.1%-41.6% edge over Trump, with Johnson trailing at 5.6% and Stein at 2.4%.

The IBD/TIPP poll remains close to the Real Clear Politics average, in which Clinton leads by 3.8 points in a four-way matchup, and 4.6 points in a two-way race.

The national poll of 1,039 likely voters was based on a weighted sample of 379 Democrats, 311 Republicans and 322 Independent or "other" voters. The margin of error is +/- 3.3 percentage points.

This is the first IBD/TIPP Poll to capture voters' full response to the discovery of a new cache of "pertinent" emails in the FBI's investigation, which appeared to be closed in July after FBI Director James Comey recommended that Clinton not be indicted.

The trove of Clinton-related emails was discovered recently during a separate FBI investigation of former U.S. Congressman Anthony Weiner, the estranged husband of  Clinton's top aide Huma Abedin. Weiner was being investigated for possibly sending illegal "sexting" messages to a 15-year old girl.

Late Friday, following the revelation of new emails in the case, Comey reopened the Clinton investigation.
